Why do trucks crash into other vehicles?

On Behalf of | Mar 22, 2021 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

If a truck hits you as you are driving along, the consequences are likely to be catastrophic. Due to the size and weight, the chances of you surviving without severe injury are slim.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) made a series of safety cards last year. They want all truck drivers to keep them visible to remind them how to stay safe. Taking a look at them can help you understand why crashes occur. It can help you try and avoid one affecting you.

Fatal truck crash occur for 7 main reasons

Almost 5,000 people died in truck crashes during 2018. The NTSB found seven areas truckers and their companies should focus on to help avoid fatal crashes:

  • Fatigue: Trucking companies need to allow drivers to get adequate breaks and rest. Recent legislation has permitted them to give fewer breaks and less rest.
  • Speed: Drivers must stick to the speed limit and adjust for the conditions even if that makes them late. Companies should give them realistic schedules.
  • Drugs or alcohol: It is not acceptable for someone in charge of such a dangerous vehicle to consume drugs or alcohol before driving.
  • Distraction: Drivers need to put phones to one side while driving. The companies they work for need to avoid calling them when they are on the road.
  • Medical issues: Companies need to ensure drivers undergo regular medical checks.
  • Seat belts: If truck drivers always wore them, fewer would die in crashes. The same goes for anyone on the road.
  • Collision avoidance technology: Truck companies need to equip vehicles with the latest technology. It can protect their drivers and others.

If a truck crashes into you or a loved one, you will need to claim compensation for injuries or wrongful death.
